The elimination of hereditary problems is one of the key issues facing all pedigree dogs. This can only be achieved by testing all breeding stock, publishing the results and devising breeding programmes using only unaffected parents, which will over time reduce and eliminate the problems.
At Canigou, all breeding stock is DNA tested for both PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and FN (Familial Netrophy). Using the test results, we are now in the fortunate position where we can increasingly mate clear to clear, thus ensuring that the offspring of these matings are hereditarily clear of these problems. We also have gonioscopy testing carried out to ensure that breeding stock is free from any possibility of glaucoma.
All breeding stock are hip scored under the BVA/KC scheme.
